SAN FRANCISCO — Internet giant Amazon is in negotiations to acquire podcast publisher Wondery, which serves up “Dr. Death” and “Serial,” hit audio shows, reported on Wednesday by the Wall Street Journal.

Wondery, located in West Hollywood, is the biggest independent podcast publisher in the world and has also reportedly discussed the possibility for acquisition with Apple and Sony Music Entertainment.

In November, industry tracker Podtrac ranked Wondery as the fourth most listened to podcast publisher in the United States, with well over 9 million listeners tuning in to the audio programs it hosts.

With audiences tuning in to hear interesting actual or scripted stories as well as interviews, podcasts have boomed in popularity.

Wondery, launched in 2016, has gained crowds for shows such as Dr. Death, Filthy John, Industry Battles, Gladiator, and The Shrink Next Door.

According to US media sources, Wondery is seeking $300 million or more from a suitor.

Both Amazon and Wondery refused to comment on the report.

As its chief executive, Hernan Lopez, defends himself from federal criminal allegations regarding suspected bribery charges over television rights to major soccer tournaments when he served as a Fox executive, Wondery is open to being acquired.

Amazon, which also delivers certain podcasts via its music app, is under heightened scrutiny from antitrust enforcers for its increasing dominance of key sectors of the market.
