COVID-19 Cases Top 50,000

On Wednesday, the Department of Health announced 2,539 new infections with coronavirus, raising the number to 50,359.

After five more patients died, the death toll increased to 1,314 while recoveries rose by 202 to 12,588, the department said in a bulletin.

Of the newly reported cases, 1,922 were recorded in the past three days, while 617 were reported late. There were 36,457 active cases, DOH said.

The agency registered a rise in the number of cases from closed settings such as the Metro Rail Transit Line 3, which contaminated 202 employees.

On Tuesday, Maria Rosario S. Vergeire, Undersecretary of Health, attributed the rise to increased testing and transmission from the community brought on by relaxed health standards.
