用氫氧化鈉溶液洗滌苯。因為苯酚有酸性，可與氫氧化鈉反應得到溶于水而不溶于苯的苯酚鈉，從而可以将苯酚除去。苯酚是一種具有特殊氣味的無色針狀晶體。
苯酚是生産某些樹脂、殺菌劑、防腐劑以及藥物（如阿司匹林）的重要原料，也可用于消毒外科器械和排洩物的處理，能跟水以任意比例互溶。
