“Hagrid’s bringing him.”
“You think it — wise — to trust Hagrid with something as important as this?”
“I would trust Hagrid with my life,” said Dumbledore.
“I’m not saying his heart isn’t in the right place,” said Professor McGonagall grudgingly, “but you can’t pretend he’s not careless. He does tend to — what was that?”
A low rumbling sound had broken the silence around them. It grew steadily louder as they looked up and down the street for some sign of a headlight; it swelled to a roar as they both looked up at the sky — and a huge motorcycle fell out of the air and landed on the road in front of them.
If the motorcycle was huge, it was nothing to the man sitting astride it. He was almost twice as tall as a normal man and at least five times as wide. He looked simply too big to be allowed, and so wild — long tangles of bushy black hair and beard hid most of his face, he had hands the size of trash can lids, and his feet in their leather boots were like baby dolphins. In his vast, muscular arms he was holding a bundle of blankets.
“Hagrid’s bringing him.”
Dumbledore
“You think it — wise — to trust Hagrid with something as important as this?”
Hagrid?”
It grew steadily louder as they looked up and down the street for some sign of a headlight;
they look up and down the street,表示他們在這個街道上看來看去,不是上看下看
it swelled to a roar as they both looked up at the sky — and a huge motorcycle fell out of the air and landed on the road in front of them.
If the motorcycle was huge, it was nothing to the man sitting astride it.
A is nothing to b表示跟b比起來,a不算什麼。it was nothing to the man,摩托車跟男人相比,摩托車不算什麼。
sitting astride it,後置定語,修飾the man,表示跨坐在摩托車上的這個男人。
He was almost twice as tall as a normal man and at least five times as wide.
這裡有兩個倍數比較的說法, twice as tall as a normal man,一個正常人的兩倍那麼高,at least five times as wide至少又有五倍寬。
five times as wide後面有省略,它省略了as a normal man,正常人的5倍寬,但是英語之中因為忌諱重複和啰嗦,所以把five times as wide後面的as a normal man給省略掉了。
He looked simply too big to be allowed, and so wild—
他看起來簡直是too big to be allowed,to be allowed字面理解是被允許的,在句中其實等同于 he looks simply too big to be possible,意思說大到不可能的地步,如果說一般人的體型有極限的話,那麼他已經大到超過極限的程度,而且不光看起來很大,還so wild,外表看起來非常的粗野狂放。
Long tangles of bushy black hair and beard hid most of his face,
he had hands the size of trash can lids,
and his feet in their leather boots were like baby dolphins.
Were like baby dolphins,像小海豚那麼大,這麼大的一雙腳,可見這是确實是一個非常huge的人。
In his vast, muscular arms he was holding a bundle of blankets.
