今天來和各位聊聊draft這個熟詞。

說起draft，最為熟悉的含義一般是“草稿、草圖、草案等”，或者作動詞表示“起草、草拟、繪制等”。比如初稿可以說“first draft”，定稿可以說“final draft”，協議草案可以說“a draft agreement”，還在草案階段可以說“be still in draft form”。

美國著名記者艾倫·巴斯（Alan Barth）就有這樣一句經典名言：

News is only the first rough draft of history.

除了“草稿”這個含義以外，draft在美式英語中還常用于表示“征募、征召入伍、迫使或勸使某人成為候選人等”，等同于英式英語中的“conscript”。比如應征服兵役可以說“be drafted into military service”，要主席競選連任可以說“draft the Chairman for a second run”。

“征募”這個含義可能對于不少小夥伴而言也是一個僻義了，但要理解也不難，因為draft本身就有個基本含義表示“挑選、抽調、派遣”。比如暴亂之後抽調警力到該市可以說“draft police into the city after the violence”。再比如一年一度的NBA選秀（NBA Draft）：

不過，今天要講的僻義就遠比“征募”這個含義要生僻得多。不妨來看看William Donohue所著的The Best Joke Book (Period)一書裡出現的一個關于醫生與病人的笑話：

A man visits the doctor because he’s suffering from a miserable winter cold. His doctor prescribes（開藥） some antibiotics（抗生素）, but they don’t help. On his next visit, the doctor gives the man a shot, but it doesn’t do any good. On his third visit, the doctor tells the man to go home and take a steaming hot bath. As soon as he gets out of the bath, he should open all of the windows in his house and stand naked in the draft.“But doctor,” the man protests, “if I do that, I’ll probably get pneumonia（肺炎）.”“I know,” says the doctor. “But at least I know how to cure pneumonia.”

該笑話的第一段最後一句話大意是說，讓他一洗完澡，就打開房子裡所有的窗戶，并赤身站在draft中。本文标題已經提示draft在這裡指的是一種風，那麼想想看，這裡究竟指的是一種什麼樣的風呢？

從句意分析，一般我們把所有的窗戶打開，是為了讓空氣從房子的一側進入，然後從另一側流出，形成自然通風。這個風在日常生活中一般被稱為“穿堂風”，也叫“過堂風”。穿堂風在英式英語裡用draught表示，而到了美式英語裡，draught就變形為了draft。

除了上述以外，draft還有兩個含義值得注意。一個是在财會方面，draft指的是“彙票”。另一個是draft還可以表示“相當大的要求”或“相當大的消耗”，比如對某人友誼的渴求可以說“a draft on somebody's friendship”。
