1、prefer的基本意思是“較喜歡，更喜歡”，多指在兩個或兩個以上的選項中優先選擇其中的一項，多用于“prefer...to...”或“prefer...rather than”結構。相當于like better 或place before the others，因此不能用more或most來修飾它。引申可表示為“甯可”“甯願”等。
2、prefer也可作“提出”解，多指提出聲明、請求、控訴等，常與介詞against連用，是正式用語。
3、prefer偶爾還可作“提升”“提拔”解，作此解時常與介詞to連用，常用于被動結構。
4、prefer隻用作及物動詞,可接名詞、代詞、動名詞、動詞不定式作賓語，也可接that從句,從句中的謂語動詞一般需用現在時的虛拟語氣，但當prefer前有should〔would〕時，其後從句可不必用虛拟式。
